As some of you may know, I recommend either Balance Bars or Zone Bars for a mid-afternoon snack. This is because they are already balanced protein and carb (protein grams within 10 grams of carb grams) and they are easy to eat at work or on the run.
But there are times that you may have had too many carbs at lunch, and you need to limit the number of carbs at your midafternoon snack in order to bring your blood sugar back in to balance.
The solution is a type of protein bar, also available at Walmart, called a PURE PROTEIN BAR. These bars have no carbs. Grab one for your midafternoon snack if you find your blood sugar is too high after lunch.
But never try to eat just protein to manage blood sugar on a long term basis. Your body only uses protein to build and repair. Your body actually runs on carbs, and your brain needs about 70% of the carbs on this diet. If it does not get at least that many carbs, your body starts to eat it's own muscle, and therefore slows down your metabolic rate.
This is the same reason that a low carb diet is not good for diabetics. Balanced protein and carb is they way to go. But if you "goof up" or splurge, your next meal can be a PURE PROTEIN BAR.
